Affordable, Scientific Radon Testing

Radon is an odorless, flavorless, invisible gas created by the decay of naturally occurring uranium in soil and water. This form of ionizing radiation is a proven carcinogen and according to the EPA's estimate, nearly 2,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States are attributed to radon.

Radon is found everywhere - in outdoor air and indoor air of all kinds of buildings. The average radon concentration of indoor air in American homes is about 1.3 pCi/L (pico Curies per Liter). The EPA recommends homes with radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L be fixed, and also recommends considering a fix if your radon level is between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L.

Do not assume that a level of less than 4 pCi/L is 'safe.' There is no known safe level of radon exposure. For most Americans, the greatest exposure of radon is in your home, especially rooms that are below grade, such as basements and other rooms in contact with the ground, as well as the rooms immediately above them.

Call Detection Inspection when you're considering buying a home to check the level of radon in your potential home! In business since 1999, we are experienced and certified to perform radon testing and can provide you with an affordable, scientific radon test.

Determine Your Home’s Water Quality

The United States has one of the safest water supplies in the world. Drinking water quality varies from place to place, depending on the condition of the source water from which it is drawn and the treatment it receives, but it must meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

Private wells, which are not regulated by the EPA, supply drinking water to over 15 million homes. Well owners are responsible for keeping their water clean and safe.

Even though U.S. water supplies are considered to be among the safest in the world, water contamination can still occur. There are many possible sources of contamination, including:

  • Sewage releases
  • Naturally occurring chemicals and minerals (for example, arsenic, radon, uranium)
  • Local land use practices (for example, fertilizers, pesticides, livestock, concentrated feeding operations)
  • Manufacturing processes (for example, heavy metals, cyanide)
  • Malfunctioning on-site wastewater treatment systems (for example, septic systems)

In addition, drinking water that is not properly treated or that travels through an improperly maintained distribution system (pipes) may also create conditions that increase risk of contamination.

The presence of certain contaminants in our water can lead to risk of illness and health related issues.

Stay safe and call Detection Inspection when you're considering buying a home to determine the water quality in your potential home! Our water quality testing meets the requirements for VA and FHA loan providers.

Successfully Testing Residential Mold

Molds are a serious threat to your health, as they produce allergens, irritants, and potentially toxic substances, including allergic reactions in some individuals such as asthmatics. While mold is part of the natural environment outdoors, mold growth should be avoided indoors.

Molds reproduce via tiny spores which are invisible to the naked eye that float through outdoor and indoor air. When these mold spores land on wet surfaces, mold may begin growing. Mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present, which is why it's important to control the moisture inside your home. If you have mold growth, you must clean up the mold and fix the water issue to prevent further contamination.

If you can see mold in your home, you should have it tested. While some surface molds are considered cosmetic and can be eradicated easily with the proper cleaning solution, the invisible mold spores in the air still need testing to determine if they are abundant and could be causing a problem. Even certified mold inspectors cannot identify a mold genus or species by sight and must perform a test.

When you have concerns about mold in your home, reach out to the professionals at Detection Inspection. Our certified mold inspectors offer inexpensive, non-intrusive initial inspections of all accessible areas of your home, and sample collections are recommended. We are a Certified Environmental Consultant #PLP10605 and follow standard industry protocol.
